  • Penicillin V is a penicillin antibiotic used to treat streptococcus bacterial infections in dogs and cats. This medication is used off-label in veterinary medicine. Do not use in rabbits and rodents. Penicillin V comes in several oral forms that must be given on an empty stomach.

  • Pentoxifylline (brand names: Trental®, PTX) is used to treat certain immune-mediated skin conditions and inflammation of the blood vessels that lead to poor blood flow, including ear margin dermatitis and cutaneous lupus in dogs, and navicular disease in horses. Its use in cats, dogs, and horses to treat skin and vessel disease is off label (extra label).

  • Perna is given by mouth and is used over the counter to treat inflammatory conditions such as arthritis in cats, dogs, and horses. Give as directed by your veterinarian. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal effects such as nausea and diarrhea. Do not use in pets that are allergic to it or other shellfish, or in pregnant or nursing pets. If a negative reaction occurs, please call your veterinary office.

  • Pet-Tinic® is a liquid dietary supplement for dogs and cats that contains iron, copper, and essential vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12).

  • Phenobarbital is given by mouth or as an injection to treat seizures or to sedate your pet. Common side effects include sleepiness, increased thirst, urination, and/or appetite. Do not use this medication in pets with liver, lung, or kidney disease or those that are allergic to barbiturates. If a negative reaction occurs, call your veterinary office.

  • Phenoxybenzamine is used off label in dogs and cats to treat urination difficulty related to sphincter tone, high blood pressure related to pheochromocytoma, and in horses to treat laminitis. Give phenoxybenzamine as directed by your veterinarian.

  • Phenylpropanolamine (brand names: Proin®, Propalin®, Cystolamine®, Uricon®, Uriflex-PT®) is a sympathomimetic medication used in dogs and cats to treat urinary incontinence due to poor muscle tone in the urethral sphincter. It is off-label in cats.

  • Pheromones (brand names Feliway®, Comfort Zone®, Adaptil®, others) are natural or synthetic substances that mimic scents released by animals to communicate. Pheromones are used in cats and dogs as behavior modifiers for a variety of conditions, including urine spraying and marking, inter-cat aggression, stressful events, phobias, and separation anxiety, among other conditions. Pheromones comes in collar, diffuser, and spray forms.

  • Phycox® MAX and Phycox® MAX Hypoallergenic (HA) are joint supplements used to improve joint function, reduce joint pain, and support flexibility and mobility in dogs and horses. Phycox® products contain phycocyanin, a natural antioxidant derived from Spirulina algae plants, which appears to have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects.

  • Phytonadione (brand names: Mephyton®, Phytomenadione®, Aqua-Mephyton®, K-Caps®, Konakion®, Hemophyt®) is given by mouth and is used on and off label to treat vitamin K1 deficiencies in a variety of animal species, usually due to toxicities. Give as directed by your veterinarian. Side effects are uncommon. Do not use in pets that are allergic to it unless the benefits outweigh the risks.
