  • Lente (porcine zinc) insulin (brand names Vetsulin®, Vetpen®) is an injectable medication approved for use in cats and dogs with diabetes mellitus. It is used to lower blood sugar levels and for long-term maintenance therapy of diabetes mellitus. This medication may be used "off label" or "extra label" in ferrets. Monitor closely for signs of low blood sugar (weakness, lack of energy, lethargy, stumbling or difficulty walking, behavior changes, muscle twitching, seizures, and/or unresponsiveness).

  • NPH (Neutral Protamine Hagedron) insulin is an injectable medication used in cats, dogs, birds, ferrets, and horses with diabetes mellitus. It is used to lower blood sugar levels and for long-term maintenance therapy of diabetes mellitus. Monitor closely for signs of low blood sugar (weakness, lack of energy, lethargy, stumbling or difficulty walking, behavior changes, muscle twitching, seizures, and/or unresponsiveness).

  • Protamine zinc (PZI) insulin (brand name ProZinc®) is an injectable medication approved for use in cats and dogs with diabetes mellitus. It is used to lower blood sugar levels and for long-term maintenance therapy of diabetes mellitus. This medication may be used “off label” or “extra label” in other species. Monitor closely for signs of low blood sugar (weakness, lack of energy, lethargy, stumbling or difficulty walking, behavior changes, muscle twitching, seizures, and/or unresponsiveness).

  • Interferon alfa (brand names: Roferon®-A, Intron®-A) is used off label to treat viral diseases in cats and dogs, such as feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) or papillomatosis. This medication is experimental in animals and studies are limited regarding it effectiveness and other factors. It is given by mouth or injection.

  • Interferon alfa, human recombinant, is an immunomodulator used to treat virus-induced diseases in cats and dogs. It is used for both its anti-viral and immunomodulatory effects. Interferon alfa, human recombinant, comes in an injectable form that may also be given orally.

  • Interferon omega, feline origin, is an immunomodulator used to treat virus-induced diseases in cats and dogs. It is used for both its anti-viral and immunomodulatory effects. Interferon omega, feline origin, comes in an injectable form that may also be given orally.

  • Iodide (sodium, potassium) is an oral antifungal used to treat certain fungal infections (e.g., sporotrichosis) in cats and dogs. It is used off label (extra label) in veterinary medicine outside of use in cattle. Use with caution in cats.

  • Irrigating solutions, ophthalmic, are ocular irritants used to flush debris and remove excess fluorescein stain from the eyes in cats, dogs, and other animals. These solutions may also be used to flush the nasolacrimal ducts and during eye surgery.

  • Isoflupredone combinations topical are combination medications containing isoflupredone (a corticosteroid) and other medications. Isoflupredone may be compounded with an antibiotic, a local anesthetic, or other medications to treat surface skin conditions where use of a steroid combination product is indicated. Its use may off label (extra label) depending on the species, condition(s) being treated, and formulation. Isoflupredone combinations topical come in powder and ointment forms, often specially compounded.

  • Isoniazid (INH) is an antimycobacterial that has been used to prevent infection of mycobacterial disease in small animals in households with humans who have been diagnosed with tuberculosis. It has also been used as part of a combination protocol to treat mycobacterial disease in cats and dogs. Treating active infections is controversial due to zoonotic transmission potential - consult with local public health officials before treating.
